These are all of the seedlings we're waiting to plant. It's been unseasonably cold since Saturday, but things are looking up; the sun is out and I'm not wearing a sweater--both good signs. Our original plan was to plant them last Saturday, since planting + taking care of Charlotte will require two people, so we'll have to see when we can squeeze in couple hours together with nothing else going on. In the meantime, we're giving these poor guys lots of water and bringing them outside for a bit of sun (when it's sunny--which it wasn't at all yesterday.) This morning they're outside already, drinking in the sun, I'm sure, since it's been so scarce for the last several days. (Non-Coloradans might not know that Colorado Springs gets 300+ days of sunshine per year, more than San Diego, CA, so for us to go 3-4 days without seeing the sun is almost unheard of and terribly depressing.)
In other news, I got the Seed Savers Exchange catalog today and I was so excited. I looked at it like another woman might look at a clothing or jewelry catalog (if anyone in the world still uses catalogs.) We didn't grow anything from seeds this year because we just moved in the end of May, and we didn't know where we'd be moving until the end of April, so we didn't want to put time and money into starting seeds indoors if we wouldn't have a yard in which to plant them. Luckily we were able to find organic, non-genetically modified seedlings for a fairly reasonable price, especially since most everyone else is out of them by June. I can't wait to start seeds next year, although I imagine it'll be a major challenge to narrow down what and which varieties I want to grow.
Someday I'll have that quarter-acre that I dream about where I'll get to grow absolutely everything my heart desires. Until then, I'm satisfied with my little yard at my little house, and buying what we can't grow from the farmers market. -Anna
